It is more threatening to be part of an organized and unified group than it is to be part of one that is fractured and has no unifying factor such as ethnicity. So depending on which category you fall into and what you believe ethnicity may or may not have any significance in day to day life. Either way ethnicity is not beneficial to perpetuate. Her article captures the complexities and ironies of ethnicity in rwanda: efforts of the rwandan government to ban ethnicity have backfired, there are multiple markers pointing towards a given ethnic identity group. But they do not always agree: despite hilker"s suggestion that identity is a construction, ethnic identity is real for many rwanda"s and has significant political implications, identity is reproduced over generations.
