Lecture 18: conflict management by way of diversity of nation states. Countries like canada and the united states are both diverse and fairly peaceful. The claim is also made that states become peaceful only when each group is able to exercise some degree of self-determination (that is when they are not diverse) Liberals generally claim that people of different racial, ethnic or religious backgrounds do not have any trouble living together. Muller writes: the creation of a peaceful regional order of nation-states has usually been the product of a violent process of ethnic separation. In areas where that separation has not yet occurred [muller could be referring to africa], politics is apt to remain ugly . Trying to keep multi-ethnic countries together is pointless because it is inevitable that it will break down or be violent. But after each ethnic group has its own state it becomes peaceful, thus violence can lead to peace.
