Reviewing the three definitions (cdc, phac, who) we see some important commonalities, including the "ongoing/continuous systematic collection, analysis and interpretation of data" and "the application of that data to plan, implement and evaluate public health process/practice. " These commonalities represent the core functions and focus of disease surveillance. Continuous and systematic collection of data analysis interpretation of the statistics/analysis dissemination of the findings taking action to reduce disease, improve productivity and/or improve health. Surveillance allows to recognize, describe and control disease, more specifically: describe current disease frequency and distribution, describe natural patterns of disease, detect outbreaks/epidemics, monitor changes in agent characteristics, display trends in health behaviours.
