Document Summary
Personality: characteristic patterns of thinking, feeling, and behaving (that is unique to each individual), ad remains relatively constant over time and situation. Personality should predict behaviour - nomothetic approach (vs an ideographic approach) Trait : a relatively stable, enduring predisposition to consistent behave in a certain way. Trait theory: theory of personality; focuses on identifying, describing measuring individual differences in behavioural predisposition. Focus on identifying the key dimensions of personality. Modern trait theories uses factors analysis to nd correlations among behaviours. Re ects basic dimensions or traits, each dimension (or trait) re ects a continuum of behaviour (e. g. introversion-extraversion) Can be reduced to 5 global factors. Stability - instability (use to be stability-neuroticism) (refers to emotional stability) These two traits were thought to be independent for each other and produce various combinations of traits. Psychotics - self-control (creative, nonconforming, social deviant) The big 5 are thought to be universal (ocean) Variations on 5 factors create diversity in personality.
