Document Summary

We need psychological science because our natural thinking style can fail. Some examples include: hindsight bias, overconfidence error, mistakenly perceiving order in random event. Sample must be as similar to population as possible in order to make accurate conclusions. Random sampling is where you literally pluck people random from this population to conduct research. Convenience research is when you use samples of individuals who are most readily available: reducing source of bias. Researcher biases is when their own expectations or theoretical slant can influence the study. This can occur intentionally (making up data), wish fulfillment (want to find certain idea), accidental and inadvertent (own expectations, consistently treating patients differently) Participant biases can occur during the hawthorne effect; this is when their behaviour changes due to the fact they are being observed.
