It plays into what we believe our personality is like, and how we place ourselves in the world. Our consciousness has a dual processing that happens simultaneously. There are always things happening at the unconscious level that help us navigate our world. Blind sight subconciouslisy seeing things but not being able to actually see the objects or obstacles. Some part of her brain can still see, but she cannot articulate what exactly she is seeing. They have used the mask to demonstrate the dual processing situation. This is important because we need to be able to tune out some stimulus so we can pay attention to the most important things around us. Organisms have evolved biological rhythms that are neatly adapted to the cycles in their environment.
