Document Summary

Observation variables x and y: correlational. Is there an association between x and y: experimental. Observing and gathering info to compile in-depth study of one individual. Recording behavior in the environment without control/manipulation. Gathering information about many people"s thoughts and behavior through self-report. Random sampling: how to get a sample of a pool of participants that represents the population you are trying to learn about. Focus on the mere association of 2 events. Purpose: observe association between 2 variables (the extent to which they co- occur) Negative correlation: inversely related, as one increases the other decreases. Positive correlation: proportional relationship, as one increases the other also increases. Correlation coefficient: measure of association between 2 variables that varies in direction (positive/proportional vs. negative/inverse) and in strength (how close the dots are to form a straight line, regardless of direction) Co-occurrence between 2 events does not mean they are related. Maybe both related to a third variable.
