PSYC 1000 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Phineas Gage, Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Limbic System
Document Summary
Sep. 22, 2014: behavioural neuroscience (part 2) Functional changes in people with brain damage: phineas gage. Experimenting with animals (lesions) and people (simulations): remote control rats. Working with dynamite, rod went straight through cheek and brain, causing severe damage to the brain (early 1900"s). No longer the same person, large change in personality. Goes on to live for 13 years. Brain uses glucose, so with special glucose, active parts of the brain show on the scan. Medulla controls the most basic function such as breathing and your heart beat. Reticular formation brings in information such as stimulations in the brain. *go over cerebellum, limbic system, and the cerebral cortex. They control opposite sides of the body ex. Are controlled by corpus callosum, which has to be severed in cases of severe epilepsy. Left hemisphere is more important, important for language, logic, grammar, math, etc.
