Document Summary

3. 2 how nervous system works: cells and neurotransmiters. Neurons: one of the major types of cells found in the nervous system that are responsible for sending and receiving messages throughout the body. Cell body (aka soma): contains the nucleus that houses the cells geneic material, genes in the cell body synthesize proteins that form the chemicals and structures to allow neuron to funcion. Dendrites: small branches radiaing from cell body that receive messages from other cells and transmit those messages towards the rest of the cells. Acivity will travel from axon hillock to a tail like structure; axon. In the form of electrochemical reacions from the cell body to the end of the neuron. When acivity reaches end of axon, it will arrive at axon terminals: bulb-like extensions illed with vesicles. Vesicles contain neurotransmiters: chemicals that funcion as messengers allowing neurons to communicate with each other. Impulse traveling down axon will simulate release of neurotransmiters, allowing neural communicaion.
