My head sank between my knees, and i could feel my face blanching. I actually felt as if i were going to perish. Taking the man"s seat, i was overwhelmed by the need to behave in a way that would justify my request. He then fakes a limp as he gets off the subway to justify his request. A functional perspective suggests emotions are signals to motivation. Well-suited to help us manage the push of biological processes and the pull of socio-cultural forces. Conscious experience: thoughts, especially the labeling of the emotion. Example: shame = narrow chest, arms down, looking down. Example: pride = broad shoulders, arms up, looking up. Agreement that emotions function as one type of motivator, but views about their importance vary. Early psychology focused on psychological drives as motivators (hunger, thirst, sex) Followed by a view that human emotions were the casual and immediate source of the motivated action (example: air deprivation)
