Middle score when they are sorted low to high (or high to low) Researchers were measuring the number of cups of coffee people drank per day. 10 office workers were measured and the results of this investigation are presented on the board in the front of class. Ss=sum of squared deviation between each score and the mean. Example: there are 3 children who did a spelling test and got scores of 11, 3, and 16 correct. These are the only children who take this test, and we are not interested in generalizing from them to a broader population. We are just interested in describing that specific group and not in generalizing to a population. You cannot have as much variation in a sample as you do in a population. Where sample measure does not equal population measure.
