According to empathy-altruism hypothesis people are not primarily selfish, at least not always! In order to connect with the person you have to connect with something in yourself that knows the feeling. Had 22 pairs of friends, different genders. 14 white european american and 8 african- american. Went under functional magnetic resonance imaging (fmri) procedure. Each were paid 160 dollars for the hour they were there. The study consisted of 5 experimental blocks during which the participant viewed 10 threat votes with no shock, 2 with shock and 12 safety cues in variable order safety cues in variable order. If they see box with an x, 17 percent of shock; Electric shock was delivered to the participant while they were either holding hands with the friend, a stranger or no none. Two electric shocks were applied to the participants ankle and their friend"s ankle.
