Believed that symptoms stem from an unpleasant childhood experience and he could treat them through the methods in the notes. Keeps the mid under control (but can t always keep up- id creates anxiety) Anxiety motivates ego to deal with conflict (id) rationally. Internalizes a set of rights and wrongs from parents. Angel(superego) and devil(id) model ego is you in the middle trying to satisfy both. Thoughts and wishes remain unconscious eg. sexual assault victim develops amnesia for the event. Unacceptable impulses are presented in a socially acceptable manor (ie a man who loves gossip would become a reporter) Ie a man gets yelled at at work and goes home and abuses his wife and children where he can t get fired. Coming up with an excuse for doing something wrong. Opposite exaggerated expression of the behaviour associated with an unacceptable impulse. Mom represses resentful feelings of her child and becomes over protective.
