Stimuli needed for survival = food, water, sex - stimuli that mimic the effects of food, water and sex in the brain = drugs - sensory stimulation (especially if it is novel) & novelty. They are reinforced from day one such like a ur. A previous neutral stimulus that acquired the capacity to strengthen stimulus- response associations because it has been repeatedly paired with food, or with some other primary reinforce. These are the ones that are learned. (john b. wolfe 1936; chimpanzees pressing a lever for tokens, reinforcer toward getting a banana) Stimuli whose reinforcing properties derive uniquely from the behavior of other members of the same species: praise, affection, attention. They are usually a blend of primary and secondary reinforcers (smile & good) there is a learned and unlearned component. They look at the lever, ex perimenter makes a pellet come out (autoshaping). You keep doing this until it goes to the feeder when hearing the noise.
