Lecture 10, chapter 9- learning, memory, and amnesia. Explicit forgetting occurs more rapidly then implicit forgetting. Had an epileptic who had his temporal lobes removed in 1953, age 27 via a bilateral medial temporal lobectomy. His seizures were dramatically reduced- but so was his long term memory. Mild retrograde amnesia and severe anterograde amnesia were a result of the surgery. Died in dec, 2008, after 55 amnesic years. Doctor who performed the surgery = scoville. Mri confirmation of h. m. "s medial temporal lobe lesion. Trial 1: repeat 5 digits read at 1 second interval. Trial 2: repeat 6 digits, the same 5 as before +1 added in the end of the sequence. Trial 3: repeat 7 digits, the same 6 as before +1. Hm could not get past the 8 digit phase, not even after 25 trials. Normal people get to 15 digits in approx. The neuropsychologist touched an array of 9 blocks in a specific sequence.
