Neurodevelopment: an ongoing process; the nervous system is plastic experience plays key role dire consequences when something goes wrong. Developing neurons accomplish these things in five phases. Induction of the neural plate: zygotes blastula gastrula. Path of tissue on dorsal surface of embryo becomes neural plate. Development induced by chemical signals from the mesoderm (the organizer) 3 layers of embryonic cells: ectoderm (outer), mesoderm (middle), endotherm (inner) Embroyonic stem cells: capacity for self renewal and ability to develop into different types of cells. Totipotent: earlier cells, can become any type of cell in body plus extra embryonic cells-placental. Pluripotent: after 4 days, stem cells become this, capable of becoming any cells that makes up the body. Multipotent (neural plate): limited to becoming one of the nervous system cells glial or neurons. Neural plate folds to form neural grove, which then fuses to form neural tube. Inside is the cerebral ventricles and neural tube.
