WEEK 7
Emotional Development
• Basic or primary emotions
o Present at birth: interest, distress, disgust and contentment
o Emerge between 2 and 7 months: Anger, sadness, joy, surprise, fear
• Complex or secondary emotions
o In second year self-conscious emotions emerge: Embarrassment,
shame, guilt, envy, pride
▪ Embarrassment is all about what others think about us
▪ Emotions that ether enhance or detract/damage self identity
▪ Relation of self to others
▪ Shame can be traced back to self-worth – highly correlated
• Emotions and social behavior
o Emotional display rules
▪ Suppress and express
• We are supposed to show the world feelings we are not
feeling, and express feelings we are not feeling too
o Ex. when you get a present, even if you don't like
it, you smile and say thank you
o Emotional regulation
▪ Harder for boys than for girls
• Boy are not supposed to express sadness, and girls are
not supposed to express anger
▪ Behaviors and language important
▪ Temper tantrums are a sign of emotion deregulation
• Unable to control emotions
• Extreme emotional discomfort
• Social referencing
o Use others’ emotions as a guide
▪ In a situation → if a parent reacts emotionally, the children are
likely to react too
• Empathy
o Discuss emotional experiences
• Emotional competence
