Attentional filtering/selection before lter: (interested in a certain thing, not the rest) ex: brewing coffee. All incoming info is processed after lter: Shadowing: repeat speech presented to one of two ears. How deeply is the unattended channel (ear) processed? fate of unattended stimuli. If participants only notice physical changes (eg. pitch, loudness)then only sensory analysis before selection (early) -> make the recognition because of the pitch. you have low level information but not getting anything out of it. If participants notice changes based on semantics (language change), then semantic analysis also before selection (late) -> if you notice it, it is early, if not late. Change from speech tones participants did not notice: * support for early selection (moray 1959) in unattended channel: Participants name you may stop now (33%) * if the information has an important relevance it has higher attention.
