Believed that psychological needs were located in the unconscious, but possible to study their manifestations in conscious thoughts and reactions. Introduced habit system to describe customary modes of behaviour that have become almost automatic and occur repeatedly without conscious thought. Believed in id, ego, superego but thought they had diff functions. Id- contained not only the instincts described by freud, but also acceptable instincts that reflected psychological needs. Also have a positive side, responsible for fantasies and creative inspirations: ego- is conscious and is focused primarily on perceived aims, goals and plans and actions, superego- mostly unconscious, first goal is to inhibit anti-social tendencies. Endorsed the general concept of defense mechanisms. Believed that a person should be studied across their whole lifetime and not a just one certain point in their life.
