Self-concept: how do we see ourselves? (cognitive focused). Infancy: noticing some things are always there (limbs) and some things are sometimes there (caregivers) At 2 years old, can pick themselves out in pictures. Learn that other people have expectations for them (rules) Age 3-4 to 12: based on skills and talents. Recognize they can do things better, longer, or faster than other children. Aspect of comparison is also related to how they feel as a person. Age, sex, family origin, and what they can/cannot do. Social comparison: belief that there is a drive within individuals to gain accurate self-evaluations. Private self-concept: learns they can lie and keep secrets. Imaginary friend could be first step in communicating there is a secret life. Later, realize they have access to their own thoughts. Perspective talking: ability to take perspectives of others or to step outside of oneself and imagine how others see us. Objective awareness: seeing yourself as an object of others attention.
