A pervasive pattern of instability (relationships, self, affect) & impulsivity that starts by early adulthood - with 5 (or more) of the following. *frantic efforts to avoid (real or imagined) abandonment. *impulsivity (2+ areas) i. e sex, substance use, binge eating, reckless driving) *recurrent suicidal behaviour, gestures, threats and or non-suicidal self injury. *adds teaching of distress tolerance and emotion regulation skills. An enduring pattern of experience and behaviour that differs greatly from the expectations of a person"s culture that impacts: As categories: you either meet the criteria or you do not meet the criteria. As dimensions: looking at them on a spectrum. Many traits associated with personality disorders are normally distributed. Thus certain behaviours and certain traits - in certain amounts, equate to personality disorder manifestation. Criteria for all mental illness is outlined in the dsm. No change in any diagnostic criteria for any of the 10 personality disorders. Personality disorders formerly conceptualized as a separate form of mental illness.
