Traditional roles = law enforcement and maintenance of public order. Duties and assignments police are expected to do: Advise, direct and provide information to the public. Cooperate with other police agencies or allied units. There are also social functions which occupy 80-90% of their time, including: Intervene in family crisis/domestic disputes resolve conflicts involving minority factions. Provide comfort and guidance to individuals and families involved in personal tragedies. The watchmen: accentuates the maintenance of public order rather than enforcements of law. Individual police officers have a wide range of discretion dependent upon private sense of justice --> lack of professionalism and promotes under-enforcement of the law. Individual police officers are to make decisions pertaining to the letter of the law. Service style: police are encourages to intervene and make contact with the public that expects personal attention to private needs and demands. Police must adhere to legal regulations but it is presumed they will be helpful and compassionate.
