Document Summary
Paths to discrimination: stereotyping and prejudice both lead to discrimination. Prejudice is a negative attitude toward a social defined group and toward any person perceived to be a member of that group (ashmore, 1970, p. 253) Prejudice is still dominant force in intergroup relations. Intergroup conflict: robbers cave study (sherif et al. , 1961) Participants were 11 year old boys who believed they were going to summer camp. They went to robber"s cave state park in oklahoma. The boys were split into groups and both didn"t know that there was another group. Three stages to this study: phase 1. Making the boys believe they are the only group. Getting the group close together on personal level. Categorization led to group favouritism: phase 2. Groups were told that there was another group and that they would be competing for rewards. Major conflicts occurred between groups: phase 3.
