Motivation: the extent to which persistent effort is directed towards a goal. Components of motivation: cognitive ability, persistence, direction, goals, emotional intelligence. The ability to understand and manage one"s own and others" feelings and emotions. Predicts performance in a number of areas including job performance and academic performance. Predicts job performance above and beyond cognitive ability and the big five personality variables. All of the above lead to performance. Intrinsic motivation: motivation that stems from the direct relationship between the worker and the task and is usually self-applied. Self-determination theory: feelings of achievement and competence. Extrinsic motivation: motivation that stems from the work environment external to the task and is usually applied by others, pay, company policies. A theory of motivation that considers whether people"s motivation is autonomous or controlled. Intrinsic and extrinsic motivation are used to explain what motivated people and whether motivation is autonomous or controlled.
