As with the genome and the nervous system, it"s a knowledge storehouse. Its capacity exceeds that of the brain: can kick in at any time, beneficial when change is faster then genetic change. We can think of these as systems which store information relevant to solving adaptive problems. Brains matter when you have to move around to find food and mates only animals that move around to find food have brains! -- you have a brain because you have to move around juvenile sea squirt: wanders through the sea searching for a suitable rock to hunk or coral to cling to and make its home for life. For this task, it has a rudimentary nervous system. When it find its sport and takes root, it doesn"t need its brain anymore so it eats it. They are food consumers because they search for food is so important, the nervous system has come under intense selective pressure.
