PSYC 3100 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Proximate And Ultimate Causation, Simile, Reinforcement
Document Summary
Outline for lecture 3 levels of analysis: different types of questions: proximate causation vs. ultimate causation. #3 why do we eat: tinbergen"s four questions (a. k. a. Proximate causes- occur within the lifetime of an individual. When did it evolve, is it unique to human or did it evolve earlier. These 4 mechanisms help understand why someone does a behaviour. Fleeing- mechanism- fear developmental- hardwired into the brain or learning function escape from harm phylogeny- evolved earlier from pre existing mechanisms. Function- aiding offspring or other close relatives who are likely to carry similar genes, could also be because of reciprocation. Phylogeny- could be shared with other primates or unique to humans. Perhaps the trait has evolved since the common ancestor of chimps. Mechanisms- happy/ signal from the brain causes the muscles to smile. Nervousness, desire to become happy, desire to deceive, drug reaction,
