Topics in health psychology- lecture 12 and chapter 17. Extent (wertheimer & santella: varies across medication related behaviour. The dependence was small and mostly dependent on social support. Even with detailed information, adherence is still poor. One reason is information overload, thus, they simply get confused or ignore the information. They say, they forget at least 1/3 of the information provided: length of the treatment is also an important factor. Influence of the disease: lower adherence with asymptomatic chronic disease, more likely with obvious symptoms, lower adherence when prognosis is poor. Treatment: various factors influence non-adherence, more complicated treatments, less adherence, longer treatments, lower adherence, character of treatment (inhaled for asthma) Modern medicine: privilege access to truth, non-adherence result of ignorance or deviance, critical perspective, compliance is about power and control, increased focus on compliance may itself be cause of increased resistance.
