PSYC 3350 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Absolute Threshold, Color Blindness, Visual Perception
Document Summary
Cognition includes: sensation, perception, states of consciousness. Sensations refers to the process of stimulation of receptor cells and transmission of information to brain centers: absolute threshold. Minimum amount of effort required for receptors to recognize something and send signal to brain about it: sensory adaption. Receptors are over-exposed and adapt to the stimulation. Perception refers to the process of organizing various sensations into meaningful patterns: what is meaningful to you is defined, formed, and shaped by culture. Auditory perception: the first cords of a song. Visual perception: french flag vs netherlands flag, harder for us to recognize as it isn"t as relevant to us as if you asked a french individual (they would recognize their flag right away) Personal experience shapes our perception by creating perceptual expectations: perceptual set. Your expectation that lead to understanding/interpreting a phenomena/stimulus. A bias that allows you to interpret stimuli in different context: sensation and perception are influenced by environmental conditions.
