They are chronic; they do not come and go but originate in childhood and continue through adulthood. They pervade every aspect of a persons life. Personality disorder: a persistent pattern of emotions, cognitions and behaviour that results in enduring emotional distress for the person affect and/or for others and may cause difficulties with work and relationships. Dsm notes that having this disorder may distress the affected person. They may not feel any subjective distress, however, indeed it may in fact be acutely felt by others because of their actions. Distress particularly in antisocial personality disorder because they may show a blatant disregard for the rights of others but with no remorse. Someone without the disorder may decide whether the disorder is causing signigicant functional impaitment, because the person with it cannot make the judgement. Many have it in addition to other psychological problems, who tend to do poorly in treatment.
