Regularly interact, sense of belonging, norms (dress, thought, behaviour), structure or hierarchically organized (leader &other roles) Same-sex cliques (small groups of 4-8 friends) Unstable, esp. boys who are members of more than one group. Each has distinct & colourful dress codes. Norms that set cliques apart from one another. Readily recognized as a member of group x. Multiple same-sex cliques -> mixed-sex cliques -> multiple cliques form crowds. Identifying with harmful if group norms are deviant . Same-sex clique as secure-based for approaching opposite-sex: development of peer sociability: classic functional analysis (dunphy, 1963) Idea is that each stage of peer sociability leads to another stage. Success in one stage leads to success in the next stage.
