PSYC 4600 Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: False Alarms (1936 Film), Change Detection, Working Memory
Document Summary
Ability to store and bring to mind representations of past experiences: to use these stored representations to guide behaviour. Perceptual representations = building blocks of memory representations. Working memory basics: short-term/working memory vs long-term memory. Long-term memory is stable, short-term/working memory is not. Long-term memories are not readily accessible (not in conscious awareness: working memory: Memory lost from working memory is lost forever, unless it was moved to long-term memory. Verbal: ex. phone number, list of names. Visual: ex. judgement about colour of item previously seen. Somatosensory: ex. keeping track of bodily feedback. Storage constrains and determines what kinds of behaviours are involved with working memory: tells us what we can do with that form of memory. Change detection tasks: classic measure of working memory capacity. 1, 2, 3, 4, 8, 12 coloured squares. To see the vwm capacity: results. Accuracy steeply decreases as set size increases beyond 4.
