Document Summary
Some substances are so motivating that all else pales in comparison. Addictive behaviours: compulsive behaviours that provide short-term pleasure, at the expense of more severe long-term negative consequences. Behaviours have hedonic qualities: ex. gambling, shopping, sexual behaviours, internet use, exercise. Excessive levels of these behaviours considered behavioural addictions. May lead to compulsive engagement among some people. Challenging to differentiate between normal and excessive participation. Mechanisms underlying behavioural addictions are relatively poorly understood: lack of good animal models. Behavioural addictions share important elements with substance addictions. Impaired control over engagement: continued engagement despite negative consequences, urges or craving. Addiction: primary, chronic disease of brain reward, motivation, memory and related circuitry, pathologically pursuing reward and/or relief by substance use and other behaviours. Impairment in behavioural control: craving, diminished recognition of sig(cid:374)ifi(cid:272)a(cid:374)t pro(cid:271)le(cid:373)s (cid:449)ith o(cid:374)e"s (cid:271)eha(cid:448)iours a(cid:374)d i(cid:374)terperso(cid:374)al relationships, dysfunctional emotional response, cycles of relapse and remission.
