Create affect by: recall your emotions during some event, movies, sounds, and music can alter moods. Emotionally arousing stimuli (vs. neutral: enhanced memory for central details. Over time: memories for neutral stimuli decrease, memories for arousing stimuli can improve. Language evokes emotion: how you comprehend language, e. g. reading a passage from a favourite novel. Interaction between emotion and language not well understood. Procedure: measuring time needed to comprehend sentences describimg emotionally laden events (negative or positive) When in an emotionally matching or nonmatching state: manipulated emotion by either having participant hold a pen in their lips (frown) or their teeth (smile) Methods: 96 undergrads, dv: how long for participants to decide whether the sentence described a pleasant/unpleasant event. Pen condition (teeth or lips: 96 stimulus sentences (50/50) Results: emotion impacted how fast they could judge, pleasant sentences were read faster when smiling compared to frowning.
