Document Summary

To solve housing problems, we need well-desired housing policies! Canada honours free market: most houses are produced by the private sector. But we also have a regulated market for some housing ie: to help poor families, canadian government builds/subsidizes building of low-priced housing. Filter down process: example of how the free market delivers housing to low-income families. 2 criteria: owned by a government or government agency, rent is geared to income or rent is calculated according to household income. Example: regent park: built in 1947, canada"s oldest public housing project and is currently being redeveloped, more than half the population is immigrants. Administrative issues: management: local housing authorities are responsible for day-to-day, rent: based on income (when income changes, rent should change too, maintenance & repairs: often no on-site superintendents ie: projects get dirty, management. Slow response to solve concerns from tenants however, people lie about their income) heating issues, elevators broken down etc.
