Intersectionality Theory
The study of the ways in which institutionalized forms of discrimination operate in
tandem in the lives of people
-comes from early feminist thinkers realizing the category of women there is factors
like race, class, sexual orientation but the majorly looked at race, class and gender
-has an impact on peoples employment chances, treatment in the workplace etc.
The main identity categories are gender, race, class, and ethnicity (but there are
others as well)
In terms of work, a person’s life chances and work outcomes might be seriously
impacted (contra achievement ideology)
Race
- a specious classification of human beings created by Europeans (whites) which
assigns human worth and social status using Whit as the model of humanity and the
height of human achievement for the purpose of establishing and maintaining
privilege and power

Ethnicity
-similar but more emphasis on culture factors
An ethnic group or ethnicity is a socially defined category of people who identify

-everyone has some sort of ethnic variation
-people have changed last names because may be associated with certain ethnic
identities, and you could be discriminated based on it without even knowing

Class
Economic class (Marx) based on relationship to the means of production (ie owners
and workers)
-social way that can include economic criteria, the status or the prestige of your job
in a more Weberian kind of sense
-cues that you may not be aware of that give away class
Social class (Weber and others) perceived position in social hierarchy based on
financial status, economic status, and/or occupational status
Gender
The culturally defined roles, traits, and status assigned to perceived biological sex
