Survey research and drl: create your own survey. Disadvantages: time consuming (create questions, sampling design, interview, coding the data, dealing with errors. Ideally you"re going to want a very large random sample, this is costly in both time and money. If you use a convenient sample, it"s most likely a small non-representative sample which may lead to problems publishing. Advantages: very cost effective, most of the work has already been done for you, it"s a large data-set, it"s probably publishable. Disadvantage: availability of questions, their research may not be consistent with your own. *health, crime, demography, violence against women, economics, etc. Disadvantages: can only use the available questions, some information may be suppressed (ie earnings, crimes, schools) Advantages: same as the drc, but you have access to con dential information (i. e earnings, crime, mental health status, student loans) Disadvantages: lengthy application process to use the data.
