SOAN 3070 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Cluster Sampling, Stratified Sampling, Theoretical Definition
Document Summary
Lecture 4 (19/01/17) qualitative research design: conceptualization, operationalization, and. Researchers always follow a certain path when conducting research: quantitative researchers follow more linear path. Also describes way of thinking and approach to issues: qualitative researchers follow a non-linear path. More of a cycle or a spiral. Not following a designated path sometimes moving laterally, or backwards depending on the research situation. Pulls together divergent information and examines information through various perspectives. Steps in the research process: choose a topic. How can we search for topics: esearcher(cid:859)s perso(cid:374)al e(cid:454)perie(cid:374)ce, serendipity, accidental discovery, and spontaneous invention. Spends time in a certain setting that seems like it might be a frugal site for research. Grounded theory theory is built from data or grounded in data: conceptualization and operationalization occur simultaneously with data collection and preliminary data analysis, this makes qualitative research flexible and allows data and theory to interact.
