September 17, 2012 - SOAN 2111/2 Practical Application of Interpretive Theory - technology and cybernetic information - interpretive theory and communication – is it liberating or isolating? o People have lost ability to communicate with each other o Technology can bring people together or separate people o Sometimes people open up online – it can also be very filtered – no facial expressions, etc. o What is private becomes public o Internet users overtime lost a sense of family relationships o Increase in loneliness and increase in depression - How do we “read” each other? - Displacement theory o Being removed from something – being online is asocial and competes with face-to-face social time  Location and timing of internet use that determines how interpersonal relations are affected – leads to possibly more better social relationships online and establishing new relationships through internet relations – internet use is often taken at the expense of other activities o Sociability and social interaction – internet transformed social interactions o Internet has created shift in time allocation o More time at the screen – less time you have for interacting directly o Displacement model – time on one activity cannot be spent on another activity o Alternative hypothesis : additional technology – coordinating social activities – efficiency hypothesis – makes time for other activities available – internet makes time more efficient o Both sides of debate had some positive things but did reveal that heavy internet users spend le
