SOC 1100 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Persistent Vegetative State, Traumatic Brain Injury, Tau Protein
Document Summary
Traumatic: cause by mild traumatic brain injury aka concussion. Pathology: is a branch of medical science primarily concerning the examination of organs, tissues, and bodily uids in order to make a diagnosis of disease. Region of speci c neuron death is unknown until the person dies. No concussions: no tau protein build up. Can cause memory loss, impulsivity, emotion regulation. Autopsy prediction: tau protein in the brain regions know to be involved in: Axon: long, tail liked structure that leads from euro body to synapses which connect to the dendrites of downstream neutrons. Dendrite: receives the messages from the other cells and transmits those messages to the other cells. Neruons: a specialized cell transmitting nerve impulses; a nerve cell. Short term affects of a blow to the head can cause stretching of axons which can be similar to a de ated balloon analogy. Long term: affected neurons will slowly die and create tau proteins which will provide new neurons.
