Social interaction: process by which people act and react in relation to others. Through interaction, we create the reality we live in. Social structure: any relatively stable pattern of social behaviour. A part of social identity and helps define our relationship to others. Ex: a teenage girl, daughter to her parents, sister to her brother, goalie, student: ascribed status. Social position that someone receives at birth (involuntary) Social position that someone assumes voluntarily/ reflect person"s ability. All of the statuses that a person holds at a given time - can hold many statuses at once. Negative sense: serious disease like cancer, aids, mental illness. Behaviour expected of someone who holds a particular status. Can identify a number of roles to a single status. A number of roles attached to a single status. Results from tension among roles linked to 2 or more statuses. The process by which people creatively shape reality through social interaction.
