Defined have lower social status, less social power than those who are the definers. Purpose is to lower a persons social status; shame the person for violating the law. Ceremony comes person from one status to the next. Shame that person is the overall purpose as a result of going against the law. H. s becker (1963: moral entrepreneurs is translated into the law, deviant career, master status. Novice, new recruit, veteran, and retiree (move through these stages) Careers are a sequence of social status as they move throughout their lives. Doesn"t matter where you are or what youre doing.
