SOC 1100 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: The Homosexuals
Document Summary
Homosexuality has often received heavy controversy in our society. Canada and the united states, the topic of homosexuality is commonly regarded upon with criticism. Using the social-conflict perspective, we can investigate how homosexuality affects our society"s reaction and behaviour towards this sexual orientation. Before the gay rights movement arose in the 1960s, most people were still sensitive on the subject of homosexuality. Back then, it was common for companies including the federal government and the military - to fire anyone who was thought to be gay (macionis, gerber, 2014, p 193). The homosexuals were also described as sick by the mental health professionals and was even in some cases placed in hospitals, hoping that they could be cured. Because of our society"s past opposing perspective on homosexuality, not all people are willing to reveal their sexuality to strangers or even to family members (macionis, gerber, 2014, p 192). This is a key aspect of the social-conflict perspective because homosexuality acts.
