Evelyn is the model daughter and wants to be a doctor but is under a lot of pressure: she feels morally obligated to make it up to them (do that they don"t feel regret etc) Angela aspires to become a lawyer but feels pressured as well. Parents think boyfriend = marriage (has to be serious relaionship) Evelyn is reminded every weekend of her parents" sacriices and inspires her to work hard. Owning a variety store = hard and long work. The parents see the eldest daughter as a failure (carolyn) and wants her to marry of: carolyn struggles to be obedient yet free, she ran away. Evelyn understands how hard her parents struggle so that"s why she works hard but she someimes grieves under all the stress. Very old fashioned (can"t get divorced, can"t be single mom, have to get married at certain age etc)
