Functionalist thinking in research on suicide rate variation. Recent renewed interest by sociologists in this topic. A common research question they raise, directly influenced by emile durkheim. Recent research on specific q of why men have higher suicide rates than women. Global ratio is 3. 5:1 of men to women. India and china, the difference isn"t as sharp, varies by country. Wealthy countries have more variation even just among them. Suicide rates among men are higher in rural areas than urban, higher among ex military men, gay and transgender people. Most research on sex/gender and suicide is quantitive. Don"t really know what"s going on their minds. Interviewed 52 men who had very recently attempted suicide in dublin. Took the interviews within 24 hours of their attempt. Reason may be is that men are expected to be economic providers and are not supposed to express emotion as much. Lgbt people may feel that they don"t belong which leads to their suicide.
