SOC 1500 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Gated Community, Corporate Crime, Child Neglect
Document Summary
This was a different type of strain than previously covered. Agnew identified three types of strain: the inability to achieve positively valued goals. The struggle to achieve goals we want to achieve. Macro-level strain (societal and structural issue that we cannot control) Similar to merton"s innovators (who accepted the goal but rejected the means: the removal (or threat to remove) positively valued stimuli. This type of strain can cause stress, anger, frustration, etc. E. g. , breakup, job loss, separation of parents. Criminal behaviour can occur to prevent this loss, to replace positively valued stimuli, to get revenge for the loss of the positively related stimuli, etc: the presentation (or expected presentation) of negative or harmful stimuli. E. g. , physical or sexual abuse, child neglect. Criminal behaviour can occur when people attempt to avoid this negative or harmful stimuli. Self defence could fall under this strain. Males and females generally do not respond in the same way to strain.
