SOC 1500 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Fake News, School Violence, Social Learning Theory
Document Summary
We rely on other people to visual what is going on. This creates our own picture of that event: the more we hear about an event, the more important it is too us, we are always hearing about it. Most research: correlation between crime and media violence: but, research can not demonstrate whether violence on screen leads to violence in real life, violent crime happens far less than every other crime. E. g. , easterhouse gangs in scotland; depiction as toughest gang taken as challenge (tanner 2010) Media blaming media: ironic twist: one section of media (news) blames others (movies, tvs, video games, music) Media creation of fear: does the media increase fear of crime and violence, early studies: correlation between amount of tv and fear of victimization (gerbner et al. 1977, 1978): recent evidence demonstrates escalating loop: fear of crime constrains social behaviour which increases fear of crime.
