SOC 1500 Lecture 9: Lesson #9 (Oct.5)
Document Summary
Criminogenic influences have the greatest impact early in life. Criminal behaviour follows predictable patterns over the life course. Life course research relies on longitudinal research designs. Caused by certain events that take place during adolescent. Criminogenic influences have the greatest influence on children at young age (easy to get children to behave a certain way compared to adults) Observe a collection of people at one point in time. Hard to tell cause and effect research because you only have one. Observing someone now, then in 5 months, 2 years, 5 years from. People drop out or you cannot find this person, so it is hard to do. For life course theory, we rely on longitudinal research. This shows age and likelihood of committing a crime. Most people are likely to commit a crime by ages of 15-24 (crime peaks) It rapidly goes down after the age of 24, but it continues to be consistent.
