Document Summary

A sub eld of criminology that focuses on the relationship between victims and perpetrators, and between victims and the cjs. Romanian defence lawyer benjamin mendelssohn is credited as the father of victimology (1930) Hans von hetig"s work is acknowledged as advancing the eld of victimology (late 1940"s) Many crimes happen in relationship problems so both victims and perpetrators need to be looked at. Through their actions or inactions, some people increase their likelihood of victimization. E. g. belief that women provoke sexual victimization by wearing certain clothes. With the exception of sexual assault men are more likely to be victims of crime. Fear-risk paradox (a. k. a shadow of sexual assault hypothesis ) Women are less likely to be victims, but are more afraid of being victims. I. e. their fear is high, but their risk is low. Most research focuses on stranger danger, they ask women and men how afraid of crime they are, they then see the different levels.
