Document Summary

You must conform to the norms & values already in place. Learn through symbolic communication how to interact (esp. language) Meaning & sense of self are a product of symbolic communication/exchange. You develop a sense of who you are based on how people talk to you/how the world speaks to you. Your sense of self is completely bound within society. E. g. raising a child, reading a book etc. Meaning & sense of self are eventually taken for granted. We expect people to behave how we think they should. We expect people to mean what they say as we understand it. How reactions/labels lead to a reorganization (redefinition) of self. Any action that violates norms but isn"t serious. Act might be recognized & labelled, but seen as isolated. Doesn"t reflect the person"s personality as a whole. Label is not internalized; not part of one"s sense of self. Violation of norms is persistent & more serious.
