Fundamentally interested in learning about the degree to which mental illness can be identified, measured & treated. What are the underlying causes of that distribution. They assume that mental illness is a biophysical abnormality that requires some form of treatment. 20% of canadians will be afflicted over lifetime. Depressive, anxiety based or somatic illness (common mental disorders - Exactly the age group that is most criminally active. Social causation thesis: stress & poor living conditions. Social selection thesis: illness makes economic stability difficult. Overall, mi rates are the same, but vary by illness. Women: higher rates of anxiety, depression & ptsd. Unique stressors: income inequality, caring for others (elderly parents), abusive relationships. But, women are way more likely to report to physician than men. Dominant gender ideology: males suffering in silence, not reporting these feelings. Relying on these files and data these facilities collect. Insured/uninsured citizens - determines whether someone will reach out for professional help.
